The Brief

The Australian Manufacturing Worker’s Union (AMWU) QLD/NT Branch provides members who march during the annual May Day / Labour Day celebrations a uniform (of sorts) consisting of a tee shirt and a piece of headwear, all branded with the AMWU logo and a key theme.

The union is bound by due diligence when it comes to financial matters, and budgetary constraints form a part of this. The union must be seen to be getting “value for money” whilst still maintaining a core ethos of procuring ethically sourced and Australian Made where available.

Our Solution

Since large scale cap manufacture is non-existent in Australia, imported product was the only viable option. To ensure value for money, sea freighting the completed product was the preferred option, which introduced additional timing issues. On top of this, the project coincided with large scale industry shutdowns in both China (for the Lunar new Year festivities) and also locally (for the Christmas/new Year holiday period).

Additionally, all items produced needed to be in the hands of regional locations well in advance of the event date (weekend prior to the first Monday in May) to allow further distribution to local event locations.

Utilising a fixed timeline with key completion dates for imported products allowed for seamless integration of picking and packing caps to coincide with shipping of individual consignments of t-shirts to each location. Shipments were scheduled such that the locations furthest away were processed & dispatched first to allow the maximum available transit time

 The Result

By utilising a design concept from a previously produced item carrying the same campaign message, Lifestyle was able to maintain a consistent and familiar branding concept which further reinforced the groundwork laid by prior campaigning. Additionally, by producing an aesthetically pleasing design, value for money was achieved as members continued to utilise the items well after the initial event was over.

The union received many comments from others during & after the event at how well the members appeared as a group. Furthermore, the Executive Officer commented the cap produced was the best one they had ever had.
